Worship with Us
Worship Time: Sunday Mornings at 9:00am
Location: 625 Washington Street, Wausau, WI 54403
What to Expect on Sunday Morning:
9:00am – Worship
We begin each service at Cornerstone by giving those in attendance a chance to share blessings from God that they have experienced throughout their week as well as share any prayer requests or needs that they may have themselves or see in the community. We then sing a combination of traditional hymns and contemporary worship music to begin worship, followed by the reading which will be the focus of the message for the day. After the message, we wrap up services with prayer, communion (1st and 3rd Sundays), and closing music.
10:00am – Fellowship
After the worship service concludes, we have fellowship together. Each week, members bring treats to share as we spend time talking about our weeks, our challenges, and our blessings with one another.
Every Other Sunday – Men’s & Women’s Bible Studies
Cornerstone’s men’s and women’s Bible studies operate year round, every other Sunday following worship. Members & non-members are welcome to join in on studying God’s Word together as well as being in fellowship with other believers.
Our Approach to Studying God’s Word:
Bible Study Worship
At Cornerstone, we encourage in depth and in context study of God’s Word. Many congregations and denominations have a set rotation of the same scripture that they read over and over again which leaves much of the Bible unread in worship. During our Bible Study Worship series, we use our service time to study a book of the Bible chosen by the congregation. We feel that this is the best way to learn from God’s Word as it allows us to read scripture in the context of the book of the Bible in which it resides rather than taking snippets that happen to fit a chosen topic or narrative for a given week.
Variety in Worship
In order to provide variety to our worship, we also invite various guest speakers to deliver sermons and sermon series throughout the year on a variety of topics.
Frequently Asked Questions:
As stated as a part of our mission, we are committed to helping members of our community and seek to give them the resources they need in order to know God and His love better. We acknowledge that everyone is at a different point in their faith journey and we seek to meet them where they are. We don’t seek to judge you for where you’re at, but rather want to help you on your journey into a life dedicated to the Lord and His teachings! We are all sinners in need of God’s salvation and are all still learning how to better follow the path God has set before us. What better way to do that than in the company of God’s people!
Anyone who has received Jesus Christ as their personal Savior and is walking in fellowship with God may participate regardless of church affiliation. Communion is served on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of every month.
Children of all ages are welcome in our worship service. In Mark 10:14-15, Jesus says, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of God. Assuredly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will by no means enter it.” Don’t worry about a little noise or if they need to get up and walk around a bit during worship! The sound of children in our sanctuary is a sign of a vibrant, growing church family. If you need an activity bag for your child, you can find our “Tiny Disciple” bags in the fellowship area by the library.
You are welcome to dress casually or formally for worship at Cornerstone. Our only desire is simply to be honoring and respectful of God and one another as we gather to worship Him and receive His gifts.
Worship services typically range from 60-75 minutes.
We are blessed to have a small parking lot behind the church building which is accessible via both Washington Street and 7th street. Street parking is also permitted on Washington Street.
All scripture quoted in our PowerPoints for worship are taken from the New King James Version (NKJV). However, we acknowledge that there are numerous other quality translations in existence, and our scripture readers are welcomed to read from their own preferred translation of the Bible. You are encouraged to bring whichever version you feel most comfortable reading!
Cornerstone is affiliated with the Lutheran Congregations in Mission for Christ (LCMC).
Congregational polity is one of the foundational aspects of the LCMC, meaning congregations have a lot more freedom than in other denominations to make decisions for themselves. With that in mind, we will always emphasize that the Bible is our authority and sole infallible guide for life and faith. We accept the Apostles’, Nicene, and Athanasian Creeds and the Book of Concord as true declarations of the faith of the congregation and as accurate guides for understanding core Scriptural doctrines and teachings. You can read more about our beliefs by visiting the Our Faith & Beliefs Page.
Cornerstone is somewhat unique among Lutheran churches. Though we are Lutheran by heritage and belief, we differ from typical Lutheran churches in a couple of ways:
- Instead of following a lectionary—which is a pre-set, multi-year rotation of assigned scripture readings used by most Lutheran churches—we typically either have topical messages or we choose a specific book of the Bible and study it together chapter-by-chapter. This allows us to understand the full context of God’s Word and experience the complete narrative arc of scripture as it was written.
- While we do utilize some aspects of liturgy, if you grew up in a traditional Lutheran congregation, you’ll find that our liturgy is on the lighter side.
